The association of third molars with mandibular angle fractures: a meta-analysis.

چکیده
OBJECTIVE To estimate the relative risk of mandibular angle fractures among people with a lower third molar compared with those without a lower third molar. METHODS Data for a case-control meta-analysis were obtained by performing a literature search in MEDLINE and EMBASE to identify suitable observational studies. To be included, studies had to present data on patients with mandibular fractures, incorporate cross-classified information about the presence of a lower third molar and indicate whether the fracture was a mandibular angle fracture on the ipsilateral side. RESULTS Six studies, involving 3,002 patients with mandibular fractures, met the inclusion criteria. Crude relative risk estimates for an angle fracture, comparing patients with a third molar with those without, ranged from 1.2 to 12.7. There was evidence of heterogeneity across the 6 studies (p = 0.001), but when 2 studies with less methodologic rigour were excluded, a test of homogeneity was no longer statistically significant (p = 0.22). The estimated relative risk across the remaining 4 studies was 2.4 (95% CI 1.9 to 3.0). CONCLUSIONS The presence of a lower third molar may double the risk of an angle fracture of the mandible. This could have a bearing on any clinical decision on whether to extract the molar.

Relationship between mandibular condyle and angle fractures and the presence of mandibular third molars
OBJECTIVES We retrospectively evaluated the impact of mandibular third molars on the occurrence of angle and condyle fractures. MATERIALS AND METHODS This was a retrospective investigation using patient records and radiographs. The sample set consisted of 440 patients with mandibular fractures. Eruption space, depth and angulation of the third molar were measured. RESULTS Of the 144 angle f...

Fractures of the mandibular angle are common and mandibular third molars are frequently implicated in their pathogenesis. The study was done to investigate this cause and effect relationship. The objectives were to measure the relationship between presence and status of mandibular third molar (M3) and mandibular angle fracture. Study design was descriptive. It was carried out in the Department ...

Objectives Mandibular third molar extraction is among the most commonly performed dental procedures. Fracture of the angle of mandible after third molar extraction is a rare complication of this procedure. Case Herein, we report fracture of the right angle of mandible immediately after extraction of mandibular right third molar in a 38-year old healthy female patient, which was surgically mana...
متن کاملAssociations between Impaction Depth of the Mandibular Third Molar and Pathological Conditions
Introdouction: Impacted and partially erupted third molars can cause various symptoms and pathologies. The aim of this study was to determine the association between commonly observed pathological conditions and the impaction depth of lower third molar teeth. Materials and methods: In this retrospective study, 370 panoramic radiographs including 724 lower third molars were evaluated to asses...
متن کاملAngle Fractures and Third Molars
The aim of the study was to assess the position of 3rd molar as a predisposing factor in the fracture of the mandible at the angle. Out of 43 mandibular fractures at the angle, during a study from 2010-12 at Era's lucknow medical college and hospital, 38 (88.3%) cases had 3rd molar present while in 5(11%) cases it was absent. Amongst the 43 patients with angle fractures reported, out of 38 pati...
